Can I Switch to a Repayment Plan if I'm Married?
As part of the FutureFuel CARES response to the COVID-19 crisis, we have created a free solution for student loan borrowers who are interested in switching their repayment plan to assist in relieving some financial strain during this hectic time. Our first release supports switching your repayment plan for people who currently file for their taxes as Individuals and Head of Household.
We are currently working on implementing a solution for people who file as Married, both for individual and joint filing. Until then, you are still able to submit an application to switch your repayment plan through the federal government website here.
For immediate relief, the federal government has allowed borrowers to pause their student loan payments until 9/30/2021 without penalty, fees, or interest accrual. In order to confirm you qualify, reach out to your student loan servicer directly. You can find the contact information for all federal loan servicers listed in our Help Center here.
Keep in mind that the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 was signed into law on March 11, 2021 and caused some changes to certain repayment plans. Section 9675 of the bill includes a provision to make any student loan forgiveness passed between December 31, 2020 and January 1, 2026 tax-free.
